This is a regional service serving NHS Grampian and Orkney and Shetland. Referrals from outwith of this region are also considered. 

The Facial Palsy Clinic is a monthly, jointly led plastic surgery and facial therapy clinic. 

Referrals to the facial palsy service can come from all the surgical and medical specialities listed as well as other therapists. GPs have direct access to refer through the electronic gateway.

There is a local support group, F@cevalue; further information can be given by contacting the Speech and Language Therapy Department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Type of treatments that may be offered depending on need:

Botox, therapy, psychology, surgery: complete service from full two stage reanimation with free functional muscle transfer (unilateral/bilateral/Moebius); nerve transfers; Static procedures for mid face; eyelid surgery (active platysma for blink; lower lid support; upper lid; gold weight; levator surgery; corneal neurotization); forehead; selective neurectomy/myomectomy; fat transfer; lipodermal grafts; synkinesis.

Additional support: Outreach via therapy team, orientation visits.

Complex Facial Clinic (CFC)

Treatment predominantly for Adults or Children 16 years and above with parents in attendance.

Referrals to the CFC are via GP e-referrals (to UCLH; neurology inbasket; facial rehabilitation) or consultant referral via EPIC or letter).

All initial assessments in the CFC are face to face. Some follow ups are done remotely depending on the patient needs and clinic requirements.

Patients can access botulinum toxin only if they are receiving facial therapy and are referred into the clinic via the CFC clinicians.

All facial palsy patients accepted including: neuromuscular – service any FSHD and OPMD patients, all surgical, all GP referrals and all bilateral GBS/MF patients.

Just started seeing more hemi-facial spasm patients on request of the neurosurgeons as there was not previously a pathway for this population.

This is not yet a formal MDT but it is the only national centre for in Wales for patients with facial palsy and has been listed for this reason.

Mr Cubitt works within a wider MDT of ENT surgeons, Max fax Surgeons and Neurosurgeons who refer patients into the service.  He will accept referrals from any healthcare professional.

New patient clinics are once a month and botox treatment clinics are twice a month.

Facial palsy is covered by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee and patients from north Wales can also be referred to St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Patients from anywhere in Wales can be referred to Mr Cubitt at the Morriston Hospital. This is not subject to local funding restrictions by health board.
